The best part is that this novel feels and reads like a story, not like an encyclopedia, and yet you're still gaining precious knowledge as you go through it.
And for those who are thinking of skipping it and simply reading the FR wiki? I've tried, it is absolutely not the same. The written down occurrences are far more badass in this book than on some wiki.
A great read Fantastic book! This novel gives the reader a map of Cormyr, its history, its traditions, etc. Cormyr, The Novel, finally gives us an understanding of Vanderghast lineage, as head battle mage of Cormyr Loved it! Cormyr - one of the most interesting areas of all of the Realms. Powerful, rich in life and stories and highly developed in the gaming books for the same region. That being said - I have to say that some of this book was a bit mundane.
Was the story good? Was the look into the life of the kingdom and all the twists, turns and plot hooks interesting? But alas, this wasn't Mr Greenwood's and Mr Grubb's best work.
As many other reviews have pointed out - there were some less than appealing parts of the book - but you cannot take those small snippets and give the book an overall rating because of it. I, instead, decided to rate the overall book - the story, the intrigue, the picture that was painted on this part of the Realms. I have to admit - I am a huge fan of the Forgotten Realms and all the books written about it - because despite numerous authors all going down different paths Overall, the book was a joy to read and while not necessarily the best book ever written, it certainly provided entertainment for the short period that it took to get through.
If you enjoy fantasy novels, you may enjoy reading a little history about one of the most powerful regions in one of the most interesting gaming worlds. One person found this helpful. My only disappointment with this book is that there is no whispersync for it. There is an audiobook for it, but whispersync is not an option : I have enjoyed listening while driving and then reading in the evening, but I can't do that with this book. The story is great and it remains one of my favorite Fantasy books, I am sure I will read and re-read it.
I just wish Whispersync was available for it. While this book jumps between the present and several key points in Cormyr's history it is an interesting journey. Overall a very good read. The story is classic Forgotten Relms, and the story lines are interesting. Would be a decent introduction to the world. If you like this, you will like Forgotten Relms.

It is the first novel published in " The Cormyr Saga ". This novel involves a conspiracy in the court of Cormyr told in a series of stories set throughout the history of the kingdom, from the days of its foundations up to the date of the main story. Then there is the myth of the forest itself - the abode, in turn, of dragons, elves and men. The myth of the dragon - a potent symbol at TSR - pervades all of Cormyr's proud past. The words of Tolkein and Leiber, for example, transport you to a magical world, while it is more difficult for a book based on a game to do so. Cormyr manages it, though, with much aplomb, making this a valuable aid to those who might wish to adventure in such a land. For here you not only have a location, but a whole history.
