Last summer Seth and Kendra Sorenson were dropped into a magical new world called Fablehaven. They discovered that their grandparents were actually caretakers to this magical preserve. Over the last two summers they have fought witches, demons, and other dark creatures. They have met fairies, golems, a magical cow, nipsies, brownies, and dragons. Kendra has begun volunteering after school at a day care several days a week.

When she is asked for her input on an activity, she has no idea she is falling for a trap that will result in her staged death. She is kidnapped and taken by an evil Lectoblix until the Sphinx can be notified. Seth returns to Fablehaven alone to spend the winter vacation on their most dangerous adventure yet. Plans for the next mission begin right away. The Knights of the Dawn are trying to get their hands on the remaining artifacts before the Sphinx can use them to open Zzyxx.

Kendra escapes from her captor with help from an anonymous benefactor and races to the safety of Fablehaven. The truth of Kendra's disappearance is revealed and Kendra and a small team journey to a dragon sanctuary where one of the keys is said to be hidden. Dragon sanctuaries are even more dangerous than Fablehaven. If the team can even make it to the dragon sanctuary through the massive distractor spells it will be a miracle, but they must find their way to the temple through dragons, peryton, basilisks, griffins, and even a hydra.

Fablehaven: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary

I read the first and adored it, the story was tight and unique and fast. I read the second and loved it even more, though the cliffhanger annoyed me. The series pace quickened even more in the third, and the fourth did not let me down for action, strong characters, unique creatures and situations - but now I have to wait for the LAST book to come!! Brandon Mull can write an action sequence like no one else, excellent visuals with rapid fire motion that I can follow. Oftentimes I find written. Oftentimes I find written action to be difficult to follow, either too choppy and jerky or far too polished to feel real. Mull has it down for sure.

Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary

It begins with Kendra Sorenson being kidnapped by a magical creature whose nature is so fiendish, the thought of it could keep you awake all night. How can you trust anybody in a world with stingbulbs in it? A stingbulb is a rare fruit covered in venomous spines. Once it pricks you, it turns into an exact clone of you, including most of your memories, and then it follows the first instructions given it until the bitter end.

Book Review: Fablehaven: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary by Brandon Mull

While four are technically open to human visitation, three are entirely closed off to visitors. Wyrmroost is perhaps the most well known, as it is home to Celebrant the Just, the current Dragon King. Soaring Cliffs is considered the most chaotic, and Titan Valley is the largest and most secure of any preserve in the world. All are shielded by incredibly powerful distracter spells.
