This is one of the shortest submissions ever I could not resist Marc-Andre Hamelin's witty and delectable setting of the infamous Nokia tune which seems to be based on a Waltz by the Spanish guitar composer Francisco Tarrega.
Hamelin - Ringtone Waltz 'Valse d'irritation d'apres Nokia' My first cell phone was a Nokia. Hi Chris, First time I had heard this. Very well and convincingly played.
Hamelin is very clever indeed. Rachfan , Nov 27, I've heard the piece a few times before, but it still raises a smile. Thanks all. It is a great little piece of work indeed, one wishes it would be a bit longer. At a pops concert, a while back, we did a "Concerto for Cell Phone" which included the Nokia ringtone and a couple of others. The composer I'm afraid I didn't commit his name to memory actually wrote a little fugato on the Nokia. The whole thing was a spoof, of course, with a local celebrity holding up a cell phone on cue while the ringtones were played over the PA.
It got lots of laughs, though. I have heard this these last days: I knew the ringtone but did not know it was Nokia's. It just shows how much mobiles mean to me.
We had a good laugh at home. Yes it's a funny little piece. It's precisely its brevity and succinctness that makes it funny. Had he made a big meal of it, it would probably have lost its impact. As it stands, it is a perfectly chiseled miniature with not a note in excess. Quite amazing for a pianist who revels in ridiculously long and complicated works.
Chris, You play this piece beautifully scintillating and crystal clear. Even though it is short, I love every second of it. Kaila Rochelle. Why, thank you Kaila! It's not a patch on what MAH makes of it of course But by any other standard I guess this is not bad. You must log in or sign up to reply here.

Marc-André Hamelin - Valse Irritation d'après Nokia (The Ringtone Waltz)
The excerpt of Gran Vals used includes the phrase that would later be used for the Nokia tune ringtone. The Nokia tune first appeared on the Nokia released in , under the name ringtone Type 7 , showing that it was just one of the normal ringtones. The tune's original name varied in the ringtone list, being listed as Type 13 on some phones, or Type 5 on others. In December with the introduction of the Nokia , ringtones were each given a specific name, and the tune received the name "Grande valse".
