The most amazing thing about the book is how all these characters get sucked into this vortex of madness, get so intimately involved with it and so close to it that they no longer recognize it as madness but simply experience it as part of the banality of everyday existence.

For example, at one point a prostitute named Blanca suffers a horrific seizure after a botched abortion. Not knowing what to do with her, the other girls drop her into a galvanized tub every morning and drag her outside where she sits paralyzed under a lemon tree. What they ought to do is have Ticho carry her out to the garbage dump one of these nights and leave her there for the dogs to eat Todo ello alrededor de los "negocios" de las hermanas Baladro.

Though the novel's opening smacks of a typical crime thriller, a violent scene at the end of a soured romance, it soon descends into something far darker.

Serafina Baladro and her sister run a successful brothel business in a small town, so successful that they begin to expand. But when business starts to falter, life in the brothel turns ugly, and slowly, girls start disappearing.

He avoids this by parodising the discourse of the police, and by using witness accounts that provide uncertainty, humour and a Gothic framework, all with a deftness that is hugely impressive.

It took me a while to get into, but once engaged his style became completely captivating. Highly recommended. May 06, Gonzalo Urrutia rated it it was ok Shelves: nonfiction.

I loved this strange hybrid of fiction and reportage from the s, taking as its inspiration the real life case of Mexican serial killing brothel owners Delfina and Maria de Jesus Gonzalez.

Written with a coolly dispassionate tone, the various players in this increasingly bizarre story take their place in the sun, and the twisted activities of fictional brothel owners Serafina and Arcangela Baladro are slowly revealed. It is noted in the introduction that Ibargoengoitia was experimenting with the fictional form to try and represent the increasing rate of violence and crime in Mexico, and how he influenced other writers such as the great Roberto Bolano.

I thought the non-judgemental, and emotionally removed tone of the book was incredibly effective, and the story was utterly fascinating too, bringing into play the full scope of human transgressions- corruption, jealousy, greed, obsession and murder. Estuvo horrible. May 24, Alejo rated it it was amazing Shelves: mexicali , latinoamericana. Jan 03, Diana rated it it was amazing.
