In the introduction to Stille Eksistenser he explains: "For the rest of the journey, I could see the woman's face between the flowers.

A friend of mine who is very well-read in Danish literature which I very much am not keeps telling me to read more books by Danish authors.
My brief experience of Danish high school included a bohemian Danish teacher, who fed us with either social realist literature of the worst kind the belief at the time was apparently that kids had to read about divorce etc. I was never captured. So I began reading this novel without expecting too much. I knew of it but had never had much occasion, or felt inclined, to read it. It was a bit bleak, to be honest, but no more so than your average Edith Wharton novel. I guess it was the old-fashioned-ness of it that struck me, especially linguistically.
The story is a quiet one, set in a provincial Danish town at the end of the 19th century, and centered around Katinka, who has married one man but loves another cf. There were some wonderful descriptions, there were some dull moments, and there was a heart-breaking death scene. I feel just a tiny bit triumphant at having delved into a Danish literary classic.
It will not be the last. Interestingly, but irrelevantly, Herman Bang almost paralleled Oscar Wilde at around the end of the 19th century.
Like Wilde, Bang was a renowned author but was gradually ridiculed and ostracized by society, notably by the press, for being a homosexual dandy and had to flee to other European cities. It makes me want to stretch my readerly goodwill toward him even more. Sep 05, Anna W. Christensen marked it as to-read. Apr 04, Ingewemme rated it it was amazing Shelves: favourite-books. An absolutely heartbreaking novel with such great attention to humerous details in the midst of a tragic life of a lonely and depressed housewife - Katinka.
At the arrival of Mr. Huus, Katinka experiences the colours of love, but being married to the womanizer, Bai, she and Huus cannot be together. Herman Bang is one of the greatest impressionist writers, and his style and outstanding talent for depicting life and people makes this book a mesmerizing read.
Jan 03, Ioana rated it did not like it. I picked up this book to practice my Danish and to get in the mood for my upcoming trip. However, I found it very disappointing.
Most of the time I can appreciate classics and I can find the tone and environment intriguing, but I am afraid neither of those happened for this one.
The language is very outdated, and the plot is very much small town life, which also does not age well. I found the plot to be uninteresting, the characters simplistic and I could not get over the difficulty in getting in I picked up this book to practice my Danish and to get in the mood for my upcoming trip.
I found the plot to be uninteresting, the characters simplistic and I could not get over the difficulty in getting into the story due to the language used. The one good thing I have gotten from this book is a deeper understanding of how the language evolved over time and the tone of the phrases used in the olden days. May 17, Sarai rated it it was ok. There is ALOT of dialogue and one gets lost in the entire tedium of it all.
I understand this is the basis of the book and how we need to delve deeper and read between the lines of the impression of the words, the hidden feeling behind what is expressed. I wanted so much more from Herman Bang's writing but it sadly fell short for me.
Though its part of Scandinavia's Modern Breakthrough of the late s, it inevitably perhaps feels anything but modern by today's standards. But the novel definitely has its moments - I was quite caught up in the romance between Katinka and Huus. Jacobsen Next up: Kongens fald by Johannes V. Jensen Though its part of Scandinavia's Modern Breakthrough of the late s, it inevitably perhaps feels anything but modern by today's standards. A lovely 19th century melodrama panorama that cynically observes the plights of womanhood to be equally born of social restrictions and women's passive acceptance of their own degradation and unhappiness.
Nov 19, Birgit Alsinger rated it really liked it. A sad lovestory about wasted emotions Aug 17, niels munk rated it liked it. So interesting as it portrays Copenhagen life and traditions. Beautiful story as well. Feb 13, James M rated it liked it Shelves: x-x-europe-xnorth. Really good book! Circles great around the subject of women position in society in This is a danish classic.
And I need to get my own copy! Nov 30, Kirstine Nielsen rated it really liked it. A lovely and melancholic short story worth your time. Sep 17, Cecilie rated it did not like it. Apr 17, Sofia rated it liked it Shelves: school. It took a while to get into the old language, but the story itself was interesting and had a wide cast of characters.
