Halitosis is associated with the excessive production of acid and volatile sulphur compounds VSCs , as well as accumulation of biofilm plaque by oral bacteria in mouth cavity. Zanthoxylum acanthopodium , locally known as andaliman or lemon pepper, is an Indonesian endemic spice with high content of essential oils, including carveol that has been reported for its potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.

We determined whether extract of Z. ZAEO was extracted in n-hexane followed by evaporation. Our results suggest that ZAEO extract could be applied as a natural ingredient for halitosis treatment.

Halitosis: Current concepts on etiology, diagnosis and management

Halitosis or oral malodor is an offensive odor originating from the oral cavity, leading to anxiety and psychosocial embarrassment. A patient with halitosis is most likely to contact primary care practitioner for the diagnosis and management. With proper diagnosis, identification of the etiology and timely referrals certain steps are taken to create a successful individualized therapeutic approach for each patient seeking assistance. It is significant to highlight the necessity of an interdisciplinary method for the treatment of halitosis to prevent misdiagnosis or unnecessary treatment.

The main cause of halitosis is the release of Volatile Sulfur Compounds VSCs produced by anaerobic bacterial activity in the oral cavity. One way to solve halitosis problem is by using mouthwash. Available mouthwashes in market contain chlorhexidine or essential oil.

Mark L. The oral cavity is considered the portal to the gastrointestinal tract and, as such, the application of probiotics for alteration of the oral biofilm has been studied. Some studies have reported that probiotic lactobacilli could specifically co-aggregate in vitro with mutans streptococci, but not with other plaque commensals S. It can be found in many fermented dairy products such as yogurt and cheese as S.
